Mattings/Underlays
Underlays are used under engineered oak to act as an acoustic barrier, and also a cushion to lay the boards onto.
The underlay is laid on the floor first, then the engineered boards are laid on top of the underlay with just the tongue and grooves glued together. This is called a floating floor.
It is recommended with stone flooring to use underlays in particular instances where the substrate is deemed unsuitable to tile to directly using adhesive (Poor concrete screed, single large areas with underfloor heating or wood or chipboard base). This system is known as a “decoupling”.
